For this installment of Song of the Week, I had to choose Beautiful War by the Kings of Leon, after seeing the newly released video for it. From their recent album Mechanical Bull, this is a great song with understated guitar lines that cross and slowly build.
All the while, the bass drives the song with a rhythm that recreates a classic war march if played on a drum but sounds almost subdued because it's a bass. Together, this helps to bring out the plaintive beauty in the lead vocals. When coupled with the video and the context of the story it tells, this is an absolute must listen. Enjoy!
