Duncan Sheik: Why His Death Is Crushing Millennials

Dolly Parton died, and the world was shocked. Tim Curry died; what is going on? Duncan Sheik passed, and this hit, but why? Most kids these days (do I sound like a grandparent?) have no clue who he is, yet when it came out that he had died at the age of 56, something felt so wrong. It felt off, and it hurt, like a piece of our youth was ripped away. This was different than Dolly and Tim, even Catherine O'Hara and Rob Reiner. Those were cruel, shocking, senseless, and unfathomable, not that Duncan's wasn't. This just hit, and I asked myself why. Why was I lingering in a place I had not been in a very long time?

I then watched the video for "Barely Breathing," and I was instantly transported back to my living room in 1996. I was 13, coming home from eighth grade, when life was easy, life was simple, and the only thing I had to worry about was getting my homework done in time to hop on my landline to call my best friends. Or to watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch. That's when I realized why I was so sad. His death was a continuous loss of my childhood and the good years that we are watching slip away daily. Music was different in 1996, and millennials are constantly saying that. Between 1996 and 1997, we met Duncan Sheik, Hanson, Matchbox 20, Spice Girls, BSB, Fugees, Sublime, Destiny's Child, and Limp Bizkit. We were so lucky, and we did not even realize it.

Duncan's career was Tony- and Grammy-winning. However, he holds such a special place in the hearts of millennials who saw him weekly on the top 20 countdowns, bought his single at FYE on cassette, and now sing "Barely Breathing" as they complete their grocery shopping. He was just 13 years older than I am now when he died, much like James Van Der Beek and Brad Arnold, who were my peers. So, why does it hurt us? Because time is speeding by; nothing today seems certain, stable, or remotely easy, and we are all fighting just to feel a sense of normalcy. To Duncan Sheik: I will always remember your piercing eyes and your strumming guitar. Rock on and rest easy.
